We have some friends, members, named Lucky and Mpo. Lucky use to be a guard at the office but some of the other workers saw us giving him some things and I think were jealous so they made up stories that he was stealing, so thus he was fired. We talked to those in charge to try to help him get his job back but it hasn't happened. He still doesn't have a job. He has two little boys and recently a sister died and now he has her 18 year old daughter with a new baby, and her son. So that makes seven people living in a very small shack.
Last week we took some old appliances out to Lucky because he can repair things and then maybe sell them. His wife came out to the truck because she didn't want us to come in their house (shack) because she had a fever and had been sick. She sent the mom and baby away to grandmas because she didn't want them to get sick because she had no medicine for her or the baby. Well, I had to do something so the next day we drove out to Klerksdorp to secure a new flat for some seniors and tried to stop on the way home with some cold and fever medicine and some money. I put 2,000 rand (a mere $200) in an envelope and they thought they hit the jackpot. It was more money than they had seen at one time - probably ever. That meant they could buy food, medicine, and taxi fare to come to church. They were so grateful. Well, I said try, because we didn't take the GPS with us the first time and weren't sure we could find their place again. We tried to follow Lucky's directions but ended clear out in some deep dark streets in black Africa where we were the only white people for miles. We had just left Klerksdorp where we had to guarantee that the new tenants would be white or they wouldn't rent to us! Are we really in Africa? From there we ended up in the deepest townships - so lost. I thought it was so ironic that just a few hours apart they would only accept white tenants and then all black residences. Well, anyway, we were finally able to follow Lucky's directions correctly and found him to give him the meds and money. That's why they will be my Christmas project this year.
